This 2nd edition builds on the success of the original 2007 version by incorporating the latest developments in the clinical evidence base for cardiac rehabilitation whilst also aligning with the wider agenda in terms of commissioning and other national guidance. This edition recognises the importance of an integrated approach to the prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular disease forming the foundation of every cardiac rehabilitation programme.
As highlighted health behaviour change and education are integral to all other components. Equal emphasis is placed on the delivery of care in lifestyle risk factor management, psychosocial health, medical risk factor management and use of cardioprotective therapies. Other significant developments include: early assessment and goal setting, carried out by specialists, together with early programme commencement; the provision of a menu of best practice approaches run by a skilled multidisciplinary team; and strong partnership (integration) between primary and secondary care.
